ABOUT SACRED HEART HEALTH SYSTEM

Since opening the area’s first modern hospital in 1915, Sacred Heart Health System has grown into the regional leader for high-quality, compassionate healthcare in Northwest Florida. Today, our services span throughout the Gulf Coast region.

Our main services include Sacred Heart Medical Group – the region’s largest network of primary care and specialty physicians – a 24-hour Emergency Room and Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, a Regional Stroke Center, Regional Heart and Vascular Institute and Northwest Florida’s leading Cancer Center, in affiliation with MD Anderson Cancer Network®.

The hub of Sacred Heart Health System is a 566-bed acute-care facility located in Pensacola, Florida. Our Pensacola campus is also home to The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, Northwest Florida’s only hospital dedicated to the care of infants and children with acute injuries or illnesses. More women choose to have their babies at Sacred Heart than at any other hospital in Northwest Florida, and as a Regional Perinatal Center and the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Sacred Heart specializes in the care of women with high-risk pregnancies, as well as premature and critically ill babies.

A member of Ascension – the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system – Sacred Heart lives its mission of care to the poor, providing comfort and healing to those in need spiritually, medically or financially. Sacred Heart spends millions of dollars each year, caring for the poor and uninsured. We also reach out to those in need with community events and our Mission in Motion, which provides free health services for the poor, the uninsured and others who lack access to healthcare.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

The Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart offers a wide range of services to meet all of a child’s medical needs, from a pediatric emergency room and pediatric oncology unit to our pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric surgical services.

As Northwest Florida’s only children’s hospital, Sacred Heart utilizes medical transportation – available day and night – to bring prematurely born, critically ill and injured babies and children to The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart from hospitals across Northwest Florida, Southern Georgia and Southern Alabama. Sacred Heart utilizes both ground and air medical transportation to serve approximately 500 prematurely born and critically ill infants and children each year.

Our medical staff includes more than 120 board-certified physicians across 28 pediatric specialties:

In addition to our medical staff, The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart offers an entire team trained to care for children, including:

  • Pediatric Respiratory Therapy
  • Pediatric Dietitians
  • Pediatric Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy
  • Pediatric Social Services
  • Child Life Program

Sacred Heart Health System has announced plans to care for a new generation of children with construction of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart – a new four-story children’s hospital – along with a major expansion to women’s services. The expanded children’s hospital will allow the hospital to provide care for more children, increase access to specialized pediatric and maternity care, and consolidate inpatient pediatric services in one convenient location.

The new four-story, 120,000 square-foot building will connect to the current children’s hospital by a ground level, glass-covered walkway and will include:

  • Pediatric Emergency Department and Trauma Center, an expansion and relocation of Sacred Heart’s current Pediatric Emergency Department.
  • Pediatric Surgery, including six, pediatric-dedicated operating rooms.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the expansion and relocation of Sacred Heart’s current NICU beds will enable The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart to care for more premature and critically ill infants from across Northwest Florida.
  • Pediatric Oncology, with an expanded inpatient unit to provide specialized, inpatient care for children with cancer.
  • Extended stay/observation beds will represent a new inpatient unit for The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, caring for children who aren’t yet ready to go home.

Resident Support Services

Relocation
The GME office is happy to provide guidance on housing options, spousal employment, and child care options, as well as contact information on trusted local realtors who have assisted previous resident physicians. These realtors understand the needs of the resident physician.

Financial Guidance
In addition to competitive stipends for residents, the GME office offers educational programs and individual financial counseling on student-loan deferment, consolidation and repayment options. Our salary stipends are designed to provide each house staff member with income to maintain a comfortable standard of living in Pensacola and surrounding communities. Residents also receive bi-weekly meal stipends. Our total compensation package compares to the top training programs in the country.

Program Balance
The University of Florida residency programs at Sacred Heart strive to fund an adequate number of residency positions appropriate to clinical needs, allowing residents to work manageable shifts as part of their training experience. The GME office closely monitors duty hours for compliance, and we review resident feedback on an ongoing basis in order to ensure an appropriate balance between education and service.
Residents receive compensation for vacation, holidays, sick leave and continuing education days, as we strive to prevent burnout and attain a work-life balance.

Counseling
Our program team and clinical staff recognize that Graduate Medical Education places increasing responsibility on house staff members and requires sustained intellectual and physical effort. We also recognize that, for some, these demands will at times cause physical and/or emotional stress.
